A part of the charter of Panel M-9 of the Ships' Machinery Committee of the Technical and Research Committees is to develop a guide to the selection backing power. An essential basis for such a guide is a method for calculating stopping ability. This Research Bulletin is an interim report on that phase of the panel's work. Paper from the Technical and Research Bulletin no. 3-4. Inside ringbinder 'Stopping Distances of Ships'

The aim of this book is to provide information for marine engineers, in seagoing and maintenance appointments, on chemicals and chemical problems commonly met with on ships. The book covers basic chemistry, fuels, lubricants, gases used at sea, fire-fighting chemicals, paints, tank cleaning chemicals, circulating water systems, the production of boiler feed and potable water from sea water, boiler water treatment and general safety instructions and care in dealing with chemicals in ships.

In this paper, the state of the art in collision avoidance is reviewed. Some of the existing obstacles are emphasized in context to the present work. Encounter at short ranges between Mariner class ships have been simulated on the computer. Trajectories were obtained using nonlinear manoeuvrability theory and the actual dimensions of the ships were included. Initial ranges and relative bearings leading to an avoidable collision were determined for various speeds under different restraints. The effect of coordinated manoeuvres was also investigated.

An outlook on Fire Safety Assessment is presented. This deals with both its applicability to passenger ships and the work needed to reach practical applications. A methodology is proposed for studying fire scenarios in typical ships' cabins by using currently available data including the specific fire load and the sprinkler performance. Graphs appear on page 281.

This guide is for by people with little or no formal medical training who are responsible for health care on board ships of all kinds. Advice is given on first aid and specific problems that may arise at sea, such as diseases of fishermen and care of castaways and persons rescued from drowning; two chapters are devoted to women's medical problems and childbirth. Consideration is also given to prevention of disease on board ship, and a recommended list of medicines for the ship's medicine chest is included.

Although the increased popularity of cruises is welcome the issue of safety of large passenger ships needs consideration. It is important to make sure that the standards and operating procedures keep pace with the changes in design and operations which have characterized the cruise ship revolution. Evacuation and SAR procedures are looked at followed by the issue of prevention. After this a few comments on pollution are made. The view is expressed that the time has come for IMO to undertake a global consideration of the safety issues pertaining to passenger ships especially large cruise ships.

Following the experience of merchant ships in the Falklands Conflict a recent symposium Wartime Adaption of Merchant Ships organised by the British Naval Equipment Association addressed the problems as follows. Experience gained by Cunard with the Atlantic Conveyor and the Atlantic Causeway; safety features provisions of extra bulkheads to control flooding and fire; provision of aircraft associated equipment hangers fuel supplies take off and landing missile detection and deflection systems; radar modifications and automatic radar plotting aids; weapons especially containerised weapon systems.

This is the second in a trilogy of papers addressing the findings of Lloyd’s Register’s studies on the nuclear propulsion of merchant ships: the first being presented at Lloyd’s Register’s Technology Days 2010. This paper first considers the underlying physics of nuclear propulsion and then explores the application of that science to the propulsion of merchant ships. In achieving this aim the paper examines the options for the exploitation of nuclear technology and considers some of the engineering implications of deploying the technology.

The book looks at electrical installations in ships, from basic design, via power generation, distribution, to all power consumers on board. Automation, remote control systems, nautical equipment and communication are all addressed. EMC, operation of engine room and bridge and the consequences of reduced manning on the design are described. It has been written with the attempt to help all those involved with decision-making, design, installation, testing and maintenance of electrical systems on board ships. This is to gain a better understanding of the subjects involved in order to make the correct choices from a number of options.

The Port State Control Initiative was set up by the United States' Coast Guard (USCG) to target sub-standard ships. The aim was to force owners flag states and classification societies to adopt responsible management practices or to cease operations in US waters. The way in which the initiative identifies potentially sub- standard ships is discussed in detail. It is concluded that concentrating effort on particular owners states and classification societies has had a positive impact on safety and pollution prevention.

This book gives the history of these ships which have long been known under two names - the Down Easters, indicating their origin, and Cape Horners, showing their chief trading route, around Cape Horn. There is also a chapter describing the many European-built square-riggers which ended their days under the Stars and Stripes.
