Submit a Story

The Lloyd’s Register Foundation Heritage & Education Centre publishes original content from a variety of authors on our website through our stories portal.

Our aim is to challenge the way people think about maritime history and to celebrate the stories of the sea. Our mission is to increase understanding across the world of the importance of maritime safety to a sustainable and efficient ocean economy. We want to be innovative and forward thinking with our stories and digital content, putting maritime history at the forefront of discussions about the ocean economy.

We commission content in the following formats:

  • Serials – 4 to 6,500 word stories that make up one serial on a particular theme
  • Stories – standalone articles of no more than 750 words

Everything on our website is published under a Creative Commons license.

Your pitch should include:

  • A title and 100-word outline of what the story will cover
  • How it links to our collection or wider maritime history
  • Proposed digital content including images, film and audio
  • The format and proposed word count
  • When you can submit your first draft

Pitches received will then go to a monthly review board. We will then inform you if we would like you to submit a first draft. Drafts will then be peer reviewed and edited before publishing on our website.

The time frame for proposal to publication is two to three months but we may hold content back to coincide with an anniversary or event. Please do not submit a proposal if you are unable to commit to this time frame.
