    Abstract

This updated textbook deals with the safe handling of bulk liquefied gases (LNG, LPG and chemical gases) and emphasises the importance of understanding their physical properties in relation to the practical operation of gas-handling equipment on ships and at terminals. The book covers properties of liquefied gases, principles of gas carrier design, the ship; equipment and instrumentation, the terminal: equipment and instrumentation, the ship/shore interface, cargo handling operations, cargo measurement and calculation, personal health and safety and emergency procedures.

    Abstract

The review presented covers technical developments leading to increased noise on board social and operative aspects early investigations and noise regulations in Sweden Germany USSR Norway Canada and Denmark. The physiological and psychological influences of noise on man and noise abatement research in Sweden are discussed. Sound sources such as engines supercharger diffusor tube diesel engine superchargers and propellors and sound transmission are considered. Sound level calculations are detailed. Examples of the use of the calculation methods for assessing noise abatement means in 4 ships using additional absorption in cabins floating floors resiliently mounted linings and visco-elastic layers on the surrounding steel structure are reported.

  • On efficient design of swath ships by using reliability-based optimisation

    Authors

    Y Pu

    Date published

    1997

    Abstract

A reliability-based optimisation technique was applied to a typical transverse frame in a built SWATH ship in order to gain a more efficient design. Firstly the transverse frame was idealised by a one-dimensional model by conducting a series of finite element analyses. Next the primary loads on the ship were calculated by a three-dimensional oscillating source distribution method with their extreme values evaluated by a spectral analysis. Lastly the frame was optimised by considering the reliability constraints.

    Abstract

German shipbuilder HDW and Norasia Lines maintain that open-top containerships are safe and offer considerable economic gains over conventional containerships. The Norasia Fribourg was the first of six such vessels ordered between 1993 and 1996 and has been in service for more than two years. The risk of damage to cargo on open top ships with rain shelters is said to be low.

    Date published

    2006

    Abstract

Some marketing aspects of 'patrol boats' are introduced. The methodology of analysing a foreign navy's current fleet and projected acquisitions is described. The factors affecting the purchase of ships or systems are given. 'Definition' is discussed in some detail including the parameters that are used in defining classes of ships. Examples of representative ships that fall into a given definition are shown. The importance of properly defining a ship especially in the patrol boat class is discussed. The world market in patrol boats in then presented. The data are broken down with numbers and value of existing ships plotted by vessel type and region. Finally future projections for the patrol boat market are given.

    Authors

    J T Shaw

    Date published

    1993

    Abstract

A theoretical approach to studying the efficiency and endurance of human engines in oared ships and boats is presented and applied in conjunction with existing data to the determination of "oar-efficiency" and "mechanical efficiency of rowing" for the Leander racing eight and for the reconstructed trireme Olympias. Oar type and design oar rig and angle fixed and sliding thwarts and the training and control of large crews are discussed. Early published work by Alexander (1927) is acknowledged.

    Abstract

The extent to which corrosion is compromising the structural integrity of the world merchant fleet is discussed with particular attention to special problems associated with the permanent water ballast tanks of double hulled ships. The response of the International Association of Classification Societies expressed through the 1991 Harmonised System of Survey and Certification (HSSC) is outlined with brief details of revised Rules and Regulations relating to corrosion protection. The choice application maintenance and repair of coating systems for water ballast tanks and cargo holds is considered together with the need to control environmental pollution associated with their use.

  • SeaKleen a potential product for controlling aquatic pests in ships' ballast water

    Authors

    Stephen J Cutler ; H G Cutler ; J Glinski et al.

    Date published

    2003

    Abstract

While investigating the use of various natural products as molluskocidal agents it was observed that several agents belonging to the chemical class of naphthoquinones were found to be highly effective. Further investigation led to the biologically active agent menadione which is being developed under the trademark SeaKleen. This product has been shown to possess significant efficacy against a wide variety of estuarine and freshwater organisms. SeaKleen was evaluated against a variety of ANS (aquatic nuisance species) residing in ballast tanks of ships.

  • Stem forms for fine ships - ease of construction or improved propulsive performance

    University of Newcastle

    Abstract

In bow form design the stem form preferable for improved propulsive performance is often incompatible with that for construction strength or arrangement. Compromise of these two approaches is discussed. It was found that the stem form has a strong effect on the bow wave and on the wave making resistance in fine ships. An equation relating to two stem form parameters to wave making resistance was derived and its usefulness was ascertained.

  • Structural evaluation of existing LNG ships based on SafeHull

    Authors

    D Liu ; G Horn

    Date published

    1994

    Abstract

The application of SafeHull to LNG carriers is considered. The SafeHull project had led to a unique and integrated approach to evaluate a ship's structural requirements based on likely environmental conditions the resulting loads the ship's strength to resist relevant modes of failure and strength criteria. The technical features of SafeHull are discussed. Methods have been developed to apply this technology to the assessment of existing ship structures. A mid-1970s built 130000m3 LNG ship with a membrane tank containment system and satisfactory service experience is used as an example to illustrate the feasibility and consistency of this approach to LNG ships.

    Abstract

Survey data on the design structure and characteristics of marine main engine and electric power systems installed on recently built merchant ships of various types and tonnage were statistically analysed by Weibull techniques in order to identify trends in system design components and control and relationships between ship type (bulkers tankers and containerships) systems and output or capacity. The effects of economic and environmental conditions on choice of installation are considered.
