  • Adapting Burmeister & Wain diesels for future ships

    Authors

    A Ostergaard

    Date published

    1975

    Abstract

The use of slow speed diesel engines in future ships will depend on achieving improved specific fuel consumption and optimising propeller efficiency. Adaption for B&W K-GF series engines include increased cylinder pressures compatible with the design limits of engine components and bearings.

  • Assessing the performance of ships and diesel engines by computer

    Authors

    G J Hawksley

    Date published

    1979

    Abstract

A computer system for assessing the performance of ships through a combined study of the hull and diesel engines is described. The mathematical model used and the procedures followed are discussed and special mention is made to the techniques used to measure the load imposed by the propeller the shaft power and speed and weather.

    Abstract

This is a reprint from the ASEA Journal 40 (1967):10-11, pp. 154-156. It brings a brief description of the electronic equipment used in bridge control systems primarily intended for turbine vessels. The equipment supplied by ASEA for the T.T. Sea Spray is described and illustrated. A separate reference list of bridge control systems on board of ships accompanies the text.

  • Buckling and vibration of a ships vee-bottom structure

    Authors

    C S Smith

    Date published

    1974

    Abstract

Theorectical study of buckling and vibration of ships vee-bottom structure is approached as a 2 degree of freedom eigenvalue problem presented as a computer program and solved for typical vessels (especially single bottom steel structures and GRP hulls) under uniaxial compression - extension to biaxial conditions is considered.

    Abstract

The application of cathodic protection techniques (including sacrificial anode and impressed current methods) to newly developing fields of marine technology notably offshore oil and gas structures (pipelines semi-submersibles platforms) special purpose ships of complex hull shape (complex double bottoms and saddle tanks of gas carriers) and high speed naval and patrol vessels is described and discussed with examples.

  • Coal fired ships may already be economical

    Authors

    MER

    Date published

    1980

    Abstract

A new forward to Y-ARD's report for the Ship and Marine Technology Requirements Board (SMTRB) claims that on certain coal trade routes coal-fired ships are already more economical than their oil-fired counterparts. Aspects of coal fire technology are discussed including remote controlled bunkering with pneumatic conveyers.

    Date published

    1974

    Abstract

Design-to-cost concepts and processes are described. Application by the US Department of Defense in the acquisition of naval ships is discussed with reference to the special problems of size complexity nonhomogenity platform-payload disparity lengthy developments periods and high unit costs presented by such vessels. Implications are considered for requirements derivation design process organisation cost estimating cost control contracting and research and development.

  • Dynamics and hydrodynamics of surface-effect ships

    Authors

    P Kaplan ; J Bentson ; S Davis

    Date published

    1981

    Abstract

Theoretical studies model tests and full-scale trials are used to correlate dynamics hydrodynamics design and performance of surface- effect-ships (SES). Problems of scaling from model to full-scale values are particularly discussed. A computer based method for describing the six degrees of freedom of motion is developed and used to predict manoeuvring and motion in waves of large full-scale craft.

    Authors

    K H Fagiewicz

    Date published

    1987

    Abstract

This paper reports an investigation into electrical interference in the frequency range from 10kHz to 30MHz generated by ships' electrical appliances. The main sources of interference presented in this paper are localized in synchronous generators excitation and voltage-control systems thyristor phase-control systems converters and main electrical drive systems.

    Abstract

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd was the first to place orders for gas turbine powered cruise ships for its Millennium and Vantage classes and after ten months in service the Millennium has successfully met or exceeded the design goals. The COGES power plant chosen by Royal Caribbean and the benefits achieved are summarised.

  • Implementation of Free-Fall Lifeboats on Ships

    Date published

    1994

    Abstract

Although a free-fall lifeboat has never been launched from a vessel in distress free-fall lifeboats were successfully launched and recovered in a seaway during two separate marine rescues. This paper addresses the basic behaviour of free-fall lifeboats considerations when using them on ships the relative economics of using free-fall systems compared with conventional davit-launched systems and anticipated improvements in safety.

  • Motions of ships in shallow water

    Authors

    R B Inglis ; W G Price

    Date published

    1980

    Abstract

A theoretical study based on a three dimensional pulsating source method predicts fine form rigid ship response motion (surge heave pitch sway roll yaw) in head beam and bow sinusoidal waves at different depths of water. Wave loadings calculated by different assumptions are compared. Problems of large draught ships operating in shallow waters is addressed.
