Cataraqui

Cataraqui was a barque measuring 138 × 30 × 22 feet. She was built in Quebec, Canada in 1840 by the shipwrights Williams Lampson. Cataraqui was purchased by Smith & Sons and registered in Liverpool. She was used to transport ‘assisted emigrants’ to Port Phillip (Melbourne) in Australia.

On 20 April 1845, the Cataraqui sailed from Liverpool under the command of Captain Christopher Finlay. There were 369 emigrants and 41 crew on board. The voyage was fairly uneventful however, one sailor had drowned and by the time the vessel neared Australia, five babies had been born and six others had died.

In the early morning of the 4 August she encountered a severe storm and was thrown onto jagged rocks off Fitzmaurice Bay off the north-western Tasmania. Heavy weather meant that many of the ship’s occupants were carried away. Only one emigrant and eight crew members survived, 400 died.
