Waterproof: Safety at Sea

This year marks 150 years of Lloyd's Register operating in the Netherlands. To celebrate such a milestone, the Lloyd's Register Foundation has funded a yearlong exhibition - Waterproof: Safety at Sea. The exhibition, held at Rotterdam Maritime Museum, will focus on Lloyd’s Register’s important role in maritime safety from the 18th century to the present day. The Foundation funded projects by SOMOS and MX3D will also be showcased at the exhibition, which will open on Saturday 9 June.

Using archived photographs, information and original objects, the LRF Heritage & Education Centre has worked closely with the Maritime Museum and local LR staff to ensure the exhibition tells the fascinating story of Lloyd's Register's activities in the Netherlands.

Speaking about the exhibition, Victoria Culkin, Head of the Heritage & Education Centre expressed her delight at hosting the Centre's first ever exhibition in the Netherlands. "The Netherlands is steeped in maritime history and we are very excited to see the outcomes from the exhibition. We hope that Waterproof showcases the unique role Lloyd's Register has played in developing maritime safety".

The Museum attracts over 200,000 visitors annually, is situated in one of the oldest and largest museum harbours of the Netherlands, and is one of the top three public maritime collections in the world. Its primary mission is to show the impact of the maritime world on day to day living. In June 2018, Rotterdam Maritime Museum was named Netherlands Museum of the Year.

Designed to attract a broad spectrum of interest, from the general public of all ages, as well as school children, academics and students and the maritime industry, the aim of the exhibition is to encourage interest in and promote the importance of education and research in maritime safety.
