The Lloyd's Register Foundation, Heritage & Education Centre is pleased to reveal it's new website Stories Portal, that will provide insightful and personal stories about Lloyd's Register, its staff and its role in the development of maritime safety.
The new Stories provide a unique perspective on Lloyd's Register's heritage, from the weird and wonderful to the globally important issues facing the world today. Each story is specially curated by the Heritage & Education Centre, with new authors from our networks providing engaging case studies, reports and stories.
At launch, six stories are available.
Dr. Alun Withey - Lloyd's Register & the Victorian Beard Movement
Alun is a Senior Lecturer at Exeter University, specialising in the history of facial hair in Britain. Alun's serial of six stories explores the historic photographs of Lloyd's Register surveyors and the changing fashion and functionality of their beards throughout the Victorian period. Farheen Muhammed - COVID-19 and the Containership: The Last Straw on the Camel's Back
Farheen is one of three interns that has joined the Foundation's Hindsight Perpsectives Project, an initiative that aims to provide historical context as a means to discovering creative and meaningful solutions for modern-day safety challenges. In this story, Farheen explores the risks associated with carrying containers on bulk carriers and the increased demand on containers as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Read Farheen's story here.
Mina Ghosh - Self-driving cargo ships: will they be haunted by history?
Mina is the second of three interns that has joined the Foundation's Hindsight Perspective Project. Assessing the impact of the pandemic on the shipping industry, Mina outlines the factors for implementing autonomous systems in the maritime sector, with lessons from the past playing a key role throughout her investigation. Nora (Yinuo) Cai - Avoiding supply-chain bottlenecks: what can history teach us?
Nora is the third and final Hindsight Perspective micro-intern. In this story, Nora examines the current backlog of global shipping due to supply-chain bottlenecks, such as the recent Suez Canal blockage. How can these issues be mitigated?
