Barbara Jones awarded the Freedom of the City of London

The Heritage & Education Centre is excited to announce that Barbara Jones, Curator of Maritime History & Heritage, has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London.

More than 100 women were nominated to receive the Freedom of the City of London, to commemorate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918. The Court of Common Council approved the Freedoms on Thursday 7th March 2019 ahead of International Women's Day. The women are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds, but all have a connection to the City and show the extraordinarily wide breadth of careers, knowledge, experience and talent among the women of the City of London.

The Freedom of the City of London has been awarded to some of the world's most influential historical figures. Recipients include Florence Nightingale, Nelson Mandela and Princess Diana. To find out more about this year's recipients, click here.

On hearing the news, Barbara spoke of her excitement in being awarded the honour. "I feel very proud and honoured to have been made a Freeman of the City of London and to be part of the initiative to celebrate the centenary of women's suffrage. I was nominated by and would like to thank Sylvia Moys, MBE, Common Councilman for the Aldgate Ward. Sylvia and I have known each other for many years as Sylvia worked for Lloyd's Register. Sylvia nominated seven women for the Freedom of the City of London and it was fantastic to meet all the others, including Winnie McKenzie who also once worked for Lloyd's Register, at a Reception on International Women's Day held at the Guildhall Art Gallery."

With over four decades worth of expertise, Barbara has been a constant source of information and consultation for the Lloyd's Register Foundation and Lloyd's Register Group. The Heritage & Education Centre team would like to pass on our congratulations to Barbara.
