    Abstract

    The range of model tests undertaken during the twelve month development period of the lines of a new lifeboat are described. The tests include investigations of resistance wake survey self propulsion seakeeping rolling and manoeuvring in calm water and waves. The value of the tests in guiding the development and the test methods employed are highlighted.

  • Monitoring of marina construction Gulf of Suez Egypt

    Abstract

    The wave conditions inside a marina are an important factor to be considered when planning and designing a marina. A study for a marina in the Gulf of Suez is presented. Here the design layout was not properly executed resulting in high wave conditions during southerly storms. The REF-DIF model is used to calculate the wave conditions inside the marina for the actual and the design layouts. Finally two alternatives for alleviating the existing conditions are suggested. The first involved extending the breakwater to the south and the second involved creating an L-shaped secondary breakwater to protect the area near the slipway.

    Abstract

    VT Shipbuilding's move from its historic base in the Woolston shipyard in Southampton to the new Shipbuilding Facility within Portsmouth Naval Base will entail another type of move a move away from conventional slipway launching to launching in a dock using a barge. After some introductory information a look is taken at conventional launching at Woolston. Next the launch of the world's first large steel trimaran RV Triton is described. Launching at VT's smaller shipyard Portchester - slips and shiplifts - is considered followed by launching at the new VT Portsmouth Shipbuilding Facility and docking at Portsmouth.

    Abstract

    Control measurements during the building of a hull on the slipway are performed in rectangular coordinate system OXYZ (a reference system in analytical investigation) which is inclined at a certain angle according to building conditions. A mathematical model of deflections is provided along with the most suitable methods of their measurement. A diagram of the deformations of the outer double bottom shell is presented.

    Changes in the hull form and design of rescue craft due to more demanding operational parameters and different strategic requirements particularly during the last thirty years are considered. The traditional round bilge displacement and semi-displacement forms are being replaced by the soft 'vee' form. Improvements in towing and manoeuvring characteristics have led to greater safety for boat and crew. Improvements in performance have demanded a continuous review of materials methods of construction machinery equipment and outfit to limit unnecessary growth in displacement.

    Abstract

    The Royal Netherlands Navy will reduce is number of frigates replacing them with PS (Patrol Ships). Their operations tasks will differ substantially from those of a combatant. Consequently SEWACO systems and manning are tailored to meeting these new threats and operational environment. Although not as visible as the SEWACO-systems marine-engineers have seized this opportunity to investigate and introduce new concepts and systems. Leading features of the platform design are low running costs easy maintenance and compliance with new regulations. Notable features are the integrate mast the RHIB slipway the hybrid propulsion configuration a new helicopter transfer system platform automation water mist fire fighting ballast water treatment and a Membrane Biological Reactor.

This paper by Susumu Mizuta, explores patent slipways in which an inclined railway is used to haul ships from water for repairs , particularly those built in Japan during the Bakumatsu and Meiji periods but also in other parts of the world. The author used an inventory of patent slipways from the appendix to a volume of Lloyd's Register of Shipping published at the end of the nineteenth century, which includes a full list of the world's ship-repairing facilities (dry dock, floating dock and patent slipway).     Abstract

    The process of ship construction has undergone rapid changes throughout the latter half of the twentieth century. The decline of the traditional slipway building berths and the introduction of dedicated newbuilding dry docks in purposely redeveloped or completely new shipyards has revolutionised the shipbuilding industry. This paper provides a general overview of some current shipyard practices and ways in which the attending Surveyor can ensure compliance with the applicable Rules and Regulations. The introduction of ShipRight procedures specifically that of Construction Monitoring and its impact on the work practices of the Surveyor are also discussed.
