    Abstract

The aim of this book is to establish the principles and practices of sound refrigeration procedure - to make available essential knowledge not only to engineers and operators of the equipment, but to all associated with the handling of the fish so that no diminution of return may be suffered through lack of efficiency. Contents include: Spoilage and refrigeration ; Icing; The fishroom ; fishroom insulation ; mechanical refrigeration with ice; refrigerated sea water ; refrigeration plant ; freezers ; the cold store ; freezing at sea.

  • The sea transport of refrigerated cargoes in containers

    Authors

    K C Hales ; J R Stott ; J J Wilson

    Date published

    1972

    Abstract

After a brief historical introduction systems of refrigerated cargo transport are described. These are independently refrigerated containers and centralized refrigeration on board ship. The first type may use an expendable refrigerant or a mechanical refrigeration unit on the integral "built-in" or detachable "clip on" type. Centralized refrigeration is next considered. Sprayed and slab polyurethane insulation for ships' strucures are compared and the non- insulated ship is discussed. Turnaround facilities at port terminals are considered. Design of insulated containers is next discussed together with Lloyd's Register regulations. Testing of containers for thermal performance air leakage and freedomn from smell is described. Repair and maintenance is discussed. Cargo requirements for frozen foods deciduous and tropical fruit and chilled meats are given. An Appendix gives annual costs of a refrigeration system. International codes and British Standards are listed.

  • Automatic control of marine refrigeration plants

    Authors

    G R Scrine ; B A Phillimore

    Date published

    1966

    Abstract

Reasons for increasing use of automatic controls at sea are briefly discussed. Refrigerating machinery and ancillary equipment is then described including compressors brine-coooled and direct expansion evaporators and the brine circuit. The logging of machinery and cargo temperatures is discussed and the layout of refrigerated cargo spaces considered. Automatic control of carrying temperatures is described in detail with particular reference to fruit cargoes. Automatic defrosting and carbon dioxide detection are then considered. Future trends including the use of refrigerated container ships are briefly mentioned. An appendix gives formulae for heat transfer from cargo to air.

  • Naval marine engineering practice Volume 2 2nd edition

    Authors

    Admiralty, Ship Department

    Shelf Location

    234e

    Abstract

This book is intended primarily for the training of Engine Room Artificers and Mechanicians. It describes the construction, operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment for which the Ship Department, Marine Engineering Division, of the Admiralty is responsible. It deals with typical items of machinery rather than particular makes. Chapter 1 is introductory; chapters 2 to 20 are each divided in three sections, the first of which deals with general description and principles, the second with constructional details and the third with operation, maintenance and repair. These chapters cover furnace oil fuel, boilers, boiler mountings, nuclear power, steam turbines, shafting and propellers, lubrication, feed water systems, steam systems and valves, reciprocating steam engines, turbo-generators, evaporating and distilling machinery, refrigerating and air conditioning machinery, air compressors, steering gear, capstans and winches, flight deck machinery - aircraft carriers, internal combustion engines, gas turbines and resilient and shock-proof mounting of machinery. There are also chapters on pumping, flooding and damage control; maintenance and refit of machinery; and operation of machinery installations at sea.

  • Marine engineers' pocket book 3rd edition

    Authors

    W C MacGibbon

    Shelf Location

    Abstract

A mariner engineers' pocket book on mechanics, heat and strength of materials, also including electricity, refrigeration, turbines and oil engines. During his career the author made notes for his own use and the instruction of others he was teaching - he has compiled them as a useful pocketbook for marine engineers. The number of books a marine engineer can carry with him at sea is limited, so a handy compend of the various rules and tables is useful for reference. To keep pace with the times, considerable alteration has been made to this 3rd edition; the rules of boilers have been amended to conform with the new rules passed by the Board of Trade, Lloyds and the British Corporation. The sections on turbines and diesel engines have been brought up to date and oil fuel has received further attention.
