The RCM-technique (Reliability Centered Maintenance) is a tool for structured maintenance and spare part handling. An RCM-analysis aims to identify the cost-optimal maintenance needs for the fulfilment of safety and environmental requirements. The application of the RCM-technique to a Ship Main engine is shown including an example of the analysis work. The analysis contains a Functional Break-down of the ship a Cause and Criticality Analysis and a Selection of Maintenance Strategy and Spare Parts.

Reliability and low maintenance costs are important factors for operators. Wartsila supplier of propulsion systems such as 'Lips' fixed pitch propellers controllable pitch propellers and steerable thrusters has developed a program to secure the performance of the propulsion installation. It has analysed the propulsion installations to improve predictability and introduced a failure code database leading to a design approach that predictive or condition-based maintenance program is set up limiting unscheduled maintenance. The types of maintenance are described followed by the service friendly design and the maintenance management and contracts. Conclusions are drawn.

One of the most challenging aspects of fleet husbandry today for any government ship owner is the proper assessment of where to spend maintenance resources to keep ships mission-ready and safe for the personnel who sail them as well as for the operating environment. The aim is to determine areas where ABS can assist the Navy and share common knowledge and processes in identifying where maintenance action is most needed on ships and recommend focused inspections whereby the continuing health of these systems may be tracked. This paper describes the components that make up the Service Life Assessment Programme and the potential benefits from application of ABS in-service classification practices applied to selected naval ship classes in the context of current Navy methods processes and procedures for inspection and maintenance.

The PAI (Phillips Alaska Inc) Pollution Prevention Program which started life as a grassroots waste management strategy has successfully expanded into the company's exploration production and maintenance areas and is integrated into daily work activities. An overview is given of the approach taken by the Amoco Orient Petroleum Company (AOPC) in developing a maintenance system and programme for the Liuhua Field in the South China Sea. The maintenance development plan has five phases. First was the development of detailed policies for equipment identification commonality and data acquisition. Next was the development of a detailed maintenance strategy and definition of the role of MAXIMO a commercially available maintenance management program. This was followed by the development of an equipment and spare parts database. Fourth on the list was the development of the preventative maintenance programme. The final stage was training and implementation.

Gas Path Analysis (GPA) has been commonly used as part of maintenance practice for aero gas turbines. GPA helps identify deteriorated components of a gas turbine in terms of performance parameter changes relating to each other. GPA's possible application to industrial gas turbines is now due for review as a generalised GPA computer program has been developed which makes use of new techniques such as a non-linear multiple fault diagnostics scheme. The program has been applied to an industrial gas turbine and several diagnostic approaches have been tried.

The method of planned maintenance developed by B.P. Tanker Co Ltd is described. Three basic steps are taken for each ship compiling an index of all equipment requiring maintenance preparing maintenance routines and setting about a maintenance programme covering a five year cycle for every item in the index. Manhours available for maintenance work were calculated aiming at a balanced workload over the five year cycle. Each ship was provided with a library of cards of maintenance routines and a visual display planning board. Miantenance report forms are then produced which act as input forms into a computer system. Both planned and unscheduled main tenance may be monitored by this method "Planned Maintenance Reviews" "equipment performance report" and "unit maintenance history" are all generated by the computer program. Future developments are discussed.

Since 1993 a group of US ship operators has been looking at new ways to manage equipment reliability availability and maintainability (RAM) under a Ship Operations Cooperative Program (SOCP). As part of this a practical maintenance and reliability management system has been developed called RAM/SHIPNET. RAM/SHIPNET uses a system of layered RAM databases to compile process analyse and disseminate field data from merchant ships. The structure of these databases is described and the role of RAM/SHIPNET in improving equipment reliability is highlighted.

The Confederation Bridge linking Borden on Prince Edward Island and Cape Tormentine in New Brunswick across the Northumberland Strait in Canada will be the world's longest spanned box girder bridge over salt water. Several design criteria for the bridge are not covered by any code or standard. A monitoring and research program is being carried out to study the bridge behaviour under ice forces short- and long-term deformation thermal stresses traffic load and load combinations dynamics wind and earthquake and corrosion. The measured data and research results will be useful for management and maintenance of the unique structure.

PEMEX Gas (PGPB) operates a pipeline network of more than 11000 kilometres that includes natural gas and LPG throughout Mexico and has implemented a risk management program that has been successfully used over the past two years applying risk assessment software tools to assist its risk management stage. PGPB has increased their pipeline informational databases as they relate to operations maintenance construction and design for their pipeline systems. This approach provides a quantitative means to balance the cost to preserve the pipeline assets against the added value measured in terms of pipeline risk reduction measured in terms of cost of risk. Furthermore the provided information can be used to make value-based maintenance or operating decisions to promote continued long-term safe operation in a setting that evaluates risk reduction in terms of business interruption environmental and property damage and public and employee safety.

ABS has developed a computer application for maintenance planning for ship hull structures. A 3D structural model is used as the foundation for recording the condition of the ship from inspections and the model contains all the necessary information relevant for each element of the structure including scantlings material grade dimensions and data of construction and repair. All attributes of maintenance significance can be entered into the model including critical areas of concern for inspection findings from inspections damages repairs gaugings hull coating condition and pitting. It is described how the application and particularly how this application can be used as the basis for a targeted critical area based or a RBI (risk-based inspection) program for a hull structure. Study results are presented and conclusions drawn.
