To assess suitable habitat conditions for the endangered fish the golden mahseer (Tor putitora Hamilton) a survey was carried out in the Ladhiya River a hill stream of the Himalayas. Data from 661 locations over a stretch of 47.5 km were collected on habitat parameters such as habitat type reach dimension instream cover and substratum type. The collected information was arranged on a geographic information system (GIS) platform to identify areas with optimum and degraded habitat. After some introductory information an outline is given of the study area. Next the methodology is looked at and the results are discussed.
