  • Managing naval maintenance - the new challenge

    Authors

    IMarE Conferences and Symposia

    Abstract

The cost of maintaining the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) can be reduced while still meeting operational requirements. The RAN now ensures that vessel maintenance is now directly linked to operational need. Trials with HMAS Tobruk validate the new policy and show that maintenance costs can be reduced by 15% while sustaining current Chief of Defence Force Readiness Requirements. This paper reviews the RAN's maintenance development and implementation project which uses a systems analysis approach to determining maintenance requirements.

  • Stochastic model-based optimal maintenance frequency analysis for industrial equipment with different failure patterns

    Authors

    C S Chang ; R C Zhou

    Shelf Location

    213b

    Abstract

CBM (condition-based maintenance) strategy for asset management is becoming more cost-effective than routine scheduled maintenance. Optimal maintenance scheduling is an important issue for CBM since it can further reduce the operating cost while retaining satisfactory reliability. A 3-phase stochastic model for investigating different failure patterns of industrial equipment is proposed and optimising their maintenance frequencies based on sensitivity analysis of major parameters. Effects of certain critical cost ratios on the cost-optimal maintenance rates under resource constraints are also discussed. Based on simulations some guidelines to select the optimal maintenance frequencies in different periods during the equipment lifetime are presented. Conclusions are drawn and future work is identified.

  • A Master's Guide to Hatch Cover Maintenance

    Authors

    Standard P&I Club ; Lloyd's Register

    Shelf Location

    230d

    Abstract

It is the aim of this guide to explain the key issues of hatch cover security and to steer mariners towards active maintenance of hatch covers. It is less expensive to keep hatch covers weathertight by regular maintenance and attention to detail, than to pay claims for wet-damaged cargo. It is crucial for safety at sea and protection of the environment to maintain hatch cover weathertightness and strength. This guide concerns steel hatch covers fitted with cleats, compression bars and gaskets.

    Date published

    1976

    Abstract

The review presented covers present problems including the economics of maintenance growth of automation engine room manning and sensing and data logging techniques. Planned maintenance comprising information gathering and regular inspection and overhauling and condition monitoring using sophisticated sensing facilities to measure performance deterioration are discussed. The new approach considered involves the design for maintenance condition monitoring data extraction and comparison integration of new procedures into the classification requirements and education of ship's personnel.

  • Successfully reducing costs through the effective automated monitoring of shipboard maintenance requirements

    Authors

    M Fisher

    Date published

    1995

    Abstract

While shore based industries have benefited from Predictive Maintenance techniques and supporting hardware/software for many years the marine engineering industry has until recently felt this technology was unsuitable to their environment. The objections are listed. This is followed by a consideration of the solutions to these objections. Next the benefits of such systems are discussed and the future is touched upon.

    Abstract

It is argued that it is essential to have men with a broad knowledge of engineering processes and operations, in order to ensure that the engineering industry of Britain maintains its fine traditions. This set of books has been written as a repository of such knowledge for men to avail themselves of. The present work, Newnes Complete Engineer, has been divided into four volumes, Volume 1: Workshop Processes and Methods, Volume 2: Machine Tools and Production, Volume 3: Erection and Installation Work and Volume 4: Operation and Maintenance. Volume 4 includes chapters on cold-start oil engines, indicator tests on diesel-type engines, operation and maintenance of steam engines and boilers, gas producers (types, operation and maintenance), care and maintenance of turbines and condensing plant, injectors, ejectors and water heaters, simplified fuel and gas testing, feed-water regulators, oil fuel and oil-fuel burning, mechanical draught, reducing valves and desuperheaters, water treatment, the modern stationary steam boiler, pulverised-fuel firing, hydraulic machinery, the operation and maintenance of power hammers, testing of lubricating and fuel oils, operation of electric winders, pumps and pumping, electricity in engineering workshops, materials testing, hydraulic presses, hydraulic shearing machines, marine heavy oil engine, refrigerating machine, oxy-acetylene welding in the shipyard and De Laval centrifugal separators.

    Shelf Location

    209f

    Abstract

The book covers a wide range of classes and types of pumps, along with specific and exact operating and maintenance instructions. It is divided into 3 parts: the first deals with centrifugal pumps, with six chapters devoted to installation, operation, trouble shooting and maintenance of these pumps. The second and third parts of the book cover rotary and reciprocating pumps and again, instructions and illustrations are given for installation, operation and maintenance of a wide variety of these types of pumps. The last chapter looks at various phases of pump maintenance control.

  • New approach to maintenance for marine industries: "reliability centred maintenance"

    Authors

    Khanh H Tran

    Date published

    2002

    Abstract

The airline industry offshore industry and many other land-based industries recognised that the main function of maintenance was to provide the reliability in order to reduce the risk of system failures and the overall cost of operating a facility and that the process involved should be centred around this i.e. Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM). First attention is given to the background of RCM. This is followed by consideration of technological risk assessment - RCM concept.

  • Replacement and maintenance optimisation of marine systems under budget constraints

    Authors

    Publisher

    IMarE Conferences and Symposia

    Abstract

Optimisation of maintenance and replacement actions has been one of the major problems in the marine industry. Traditional replacement and maintenance models usually assume unlimited capital. However ship operators are frequently restricted by limited maintenance and investment funds. Under budget constraints the replacement and maintenance decisions must be determined simultaneously. Interdependence of decisions significantly increases the computational difficulty. The authors describe an integer programming model and discuss a Langrangian-based methodology with an example. The model is applicable to the maintenance and replacement of a single ship as well as an entire ship fleet considering different options under budget constraints.

  • Maintenance optimization on merchant ships

    Authors

    Date published

    2000

    Abstract

Traditionally maintenance on board ship has always been carried out empirically mainly based on the recommendations of the manufacturers and/or the requirements of the Classification Societies. This approach does not necessarily lead to the minimization of the life cycle costs of the ship. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the potential for optimizing the maintenance costs when the operating data already available in the onboard maintenance management software are correctly interpreted statistically and used in the appropriate models.
